Alex Mathers is talented graphic designer & illustrator. I’ve took a chance to take an interview with Alex about his new book, work and plans. Enjoy!
1. Thank you Alex for taking time to do this interview. For the beginning could you introduce yourself to our readers?
I am an illustrator and designer living at the moment in London, UK and I studied geography at university. I’m a fan of war films, obscure electronic music, writing, Japan and contemporary design. I am currently running two sites. One is Red Lemon Club, a site for creative professionals aimed at sharing various methods and discussions on online self promotion. My other site, Ape on the Moon, is a blog showcasing the best in contemporary illustration styles and techniques, featuring a host of excellent illustrators. I also contribute to Design Taxi and am about to join the team at creative productivity site: the 99%.
2. You run several websites. How do you find time to manage all them?
That’s a good question! I tend to have a rough schedule in my mind with regards to how often I post each week, and work my freelancing schedule around that. It’s hard work, but I always have an eye out for things that I could share on either of my sites. I use Google docs to keep a note of articles worth writing for on Red Lemon Club, then refer back to the notes when it’s time to post. This way I’m not spending lots of time researching in one sitting. I have a lot of accumulated material to work with.
3. Where do you find inspiration?
Generally, my inspiration for my own creative work comes from the other artists I browse and interact with online, as well as the movies I watch. I’m hugely inspired by Japanese culture, and am visiting the country in a couple of weeks time, after my book launch. I’ve been before, but I hope to absorb a lot when I’m there again, both mentally, and through taking photographs.
4. What is your key to success?
My personal thought on success in general is that standing out is crucial. As a creative professional, you need to stand out, not only in the work that create, but in the way you market yourselves. Obviously, more effective self promotion, coupled with being remarkable as a professional within your field, will help you towards success.
5. How your workspace look like?

I hate to disappoint, but my workspace is generally pretty tidy. I find it difficult to work when there is a mess around. This is especially the case as my current workspace is the room I sleep in too.
6. What is your typical day routine?
I’m definitely a night worker, so will tend to take some time getting into a working momentum during the course of a day. I’ll get up pretty late, but then go to bed very late. I’m more productive when there are fewer distractions around where I live, and that is best in the evening and night.
7. What motivated you to write this book?
I set up Red Lemon Club, and subsequently wrote the book in response to my own need as an illustrator and designer to more effectively promote myself. As most of where I was looking was online-based, this was the angle I took with the book. I’m very excited to be sharing the information I’ve collected over the last year or so with fellow creatives, in a digestible, guidebook format.
8. Do you have any plans or projects for 2010 to share with our readers?
I’m looking into growing my two sites further, expanding my illustration portfolio, promoting my book, working on music-making on the side and eventually possibly starting a book on promotion for specifically musicians.
