Another note: Sites are in no specific order. Perhaps in the future I can get some sort of rating system in place, but for now these are all random.

1. WPZOOM

WPZoom reminds me a lot of WooThemes to be honest. They do solid work and a lot of it. Good business, magazine, and portfolio themes. Their membership fee seems reasonable and well worth it.

Pricing: $69/$149 per theme, or subscribe for $9/month ($199 setup fee) or $19/month to get PSD files ($299 setup)

2. Solostream

Solostream has both premium and free themes for every design need. 30+ solid themes for the slightly-expensive price of $79 each. Luckily, they are currently featuring a 3-for-1 coupon that takes that price down to $26.33/per theme. Not bad at all.

Pricing: $79 per theme (currently have an awesome 3-for-1 coupon though!)

3. Elegant Themes

Elegant Themes has been around for a while and always produce high quality work. In my opinion, even after the price increase from $20, this is the best deal for WordPress themes on the web.

Pricing: $39.95/year

4. StudioPress

StudioPress features several themes built on their Genesis framework. They offer both free and paid themes.

Pricing: $79.95 for theme + framework, $299.95 for all of their themes (including future releases).

5. Organic Themes

I will let their about page do the talking for me:

Organic Themes was founded by David Morgan and Jeff Milone in the small town of Lahaina on the Hawaiian Island of Maui. We chose the name “Organic Themes” because we felt it reflected our personal lifestyles, and suited our approach to the design and development of WordPress themes. Organic Themes are professionally designed without excessive flashy effects, gradients, drop shadows and other unnecessary added “hormones” of the design world. In addition, our code is clean, easy to understand, and the theme options are not overwhelming.

Pricing: $69 per theme, $249 for all of them (including future releases).

6. PageLines

PageLines has a cool Drag & Drop framework that all of the themes are built upon. They currently feature only 5 themes, but their designs are beautifully elegant and as they say on the website, designed for perfectionists.

Pricing: $79-$149 per theme, or subscribe for $14-$18 per month.

7. VivaThemes

Viva Themes was launched in 2009 and has been producing nice themes ever since. Notable themes: Amantina, l’Image

Pricing: $46 per theme, $160 for all themes (not including future releases)

8. ThemeTrust

ThemeTrust has some really great themes for standard prices. Check out the Quantum theme – gorgeous and ultra-easy to set up.

Pricing: $49 per theme (buy 1 get 1 free)

9. RichWP

RichWP themes run on their custom framework, the aptly names RichWP Theme Framework. Really solid work here, but the themes are a bit expensive.

Pricing: $127 per theme + framework

10. Themefuse

Themefuse has a lot of great themes, especially for app websites. I really dig their Envision theme and it’s great pricing page.

Pricing: $39/$49 per theme

11. Themify.me

Themify.me has some nice, simple themes. It seems to me like their work is getting better and better and their most recent offerings are impressive. Folo is a good one. Fair pricing, as well.

Pricing: $39/$59 per theme (buy 1 get 1) or subscribe for $10/$20 per month ($100/$150 setup fees respectively)

12. Legend Themes

Not much to offer yet, but what they have looks solid. Perhaps a bit expensive, but according to their About page…

Free as in Freedom.

All of our themes are licensed under the GPL. Not just the just the PHP and WordPress parts, but also the images and CSS. You may use our themes on as many sites as you like and modify them to your hearts content. The only thing we ask is that if you are going to distribute our themes, you improve them first. You don’t even have to give us credit.

Pricing: $70 per theme

13. Templatic

I like Templatic’s work a lot, and their 1-click auto-install makes it very easy to get a theme up and looking just like the demo, which as many of you know, can be a bit of a problem sometimes. Definitely worth a look.

Pricing: $65/99 per theme or subscribe for $15/month ($299 setup fee)

14. Gorilla Themes

Gorilla Themes has some good releases, of which the most notable is Nightclubbing. Good music and entertainment theme resource.

Pricing: $39/$69/$99 per theme

Setup instructions:

Setting up the theme is incredible easy. Everything is located in options.php for easy editing.

To edit how many portfolio samples show on the front page, simply edit $portfolio_show to reflect the correct number. The same goes with $services_show. The designated pages (like Portfolio or Services) will show all entries.
To edit which category houses the 'Featured' posts that are shown in the slider, simple edit $featured_id to the appropriate post category ID. Edit $featured_show to allow the number of posts to be featured.

Comparison of 12 WordPress Theme Frameworks

A theme framework is a set of building blocks that make theme development easier and dramatically speeds up development time by providing the core structure (or framework) needed by a theme. Frameworks typically provide all necessary layouts, template files, functions, and more, leaving little but the styling to the developer (or designer).
This post will compare 12 of the popular theme frameworks, giving a brief overview of each, and resources such as download links, child themes, documentation, etc.

Frameworks

1. Buffet Framework

Subscription: No. Price: free.

Buffet is a framework written by Melvin Lee designed to be a powerful tool for developers, and also an easy to use system for end users who wish to be able to add / remove elements of site with ease.

Like most WordPress theme frameworks, the Buffet Framework utlises WordPress actions and filters to allow theme developers to add additional content without editing the template files using the child theme concept.

Buffet has a decent following and seems to be a good, solid framework. Definitely the most notable feature is its inclusion of Extensions. As Melvin states on the framework page: “Another key feature of this framework is the usage of extensions. Theme developers can group a set of action and filter functions into a class and register it as a theme extension. With it, users of the child theme itself can enable/disable that extension easily whenever they want via the options panel“. That being said, however, the framework has not been updated since mid 2009, which was back with WordPress v2.7, so it is likely out of date and possibly has a few compatibility issues with latest versions of WordPress.

2. Carrington JAM

Subscription: No. Price: free

Coming from the folks of Crowd Favorite, Carrington JAM (Just Add Markup) “is a bare-bones theme skeleton. It is intended for developers and designers as a starting point for building a new theme, it is not designed for end-users looking for a blog theme that is ready to go.”

Unlike Buffet, Carrington JAM is being actively developed and has already been made ready for many of the new features coming in WP 3.1. JAM is built on top of the Carrington Core, which was developed with a CMS mindset.

For a WordPress theme professional, it’s the best thing since sliced bread.

Elastic, developed by Daryl Koopersmith, is different than most frameworks, mostly in that it’s not just geared towards developers, but rather towards everyone.

Elastic is a visual theme editor and theme engine for WordPress and a new approach to WordPress themes. We think that theme options aren’t enough—themes should be easy for anyone to edit. We believe that user-friendly theme editing can produce developer-friendly themes, all for the price of free.

Currently Elastic is in heavy development and recommended by the developer to not be used on live websites. I’m mentioning it here in this post because it has a lot of future potential.

Catalyst is a “blank canvas” theme, much like many of the other theme frameworks out there, designed to give you a very solid basis upon which to build your site. However, unlike many of the other blank slate themes, Catalyst comes bundled with a complete theme options panel, and 22 custom skins, giving it over 600 different design options out of the box. Because of its extensive control panel, and bountiful options, Catalyst is for both designers and developers alike.

It has a huge features list, a strong following, dozens of child themes, and is probably considered one of the overall best frameworks, at least for non developers. One of Genesis’ strongest selling points is its friendliness to non developers, and that’s largely because of the large number of child themes available for it, which fulfill just about every design criteria imaginable.

It provides absolutely everything needed by a complete theme without any of the unnecessary bloat.

An open-source theme designed as a starting point for simple customisation, which also happens to look pretty darn good out of the box.

Developed by the crew at Theme Hybrid, including the well-known Justin Tadlock, Hybrid Core is a theme development framework designed for creating solid parent themes. It aims to provide developers with all of the complex functionality, letting them just focus on the theme’s HTML, CSS, and Javascript–the surface elements.

The development team makes an important note to users: Hybrid Core is not a ready to use theme. It is the basis upon which to build your ready-to-use parent themes, from which child themes can be made.

Hybrid Core is free and open source and can be used for any kind of project, including commercial.

Another one of the single most well-known WordPress theme frameworks, Thesis is developed Chris Pearson and the folks of by DIYthemes.com. It is an extremely flexible and versatile theme used by thousands of developers and non-developers alike. Like many (or all) of the other massively popular frameworks, Thesis makes it exceptionally easy to modify content layouts, custom functions, and more through the use of hooks and filters. Unlike some other frameworks, the Thesis folks have also provided the community with a large number of helpful resources to aide in the customization of Thesis. To boost its repertoire even further, Thesis also has a very nice showcase of rather well-known folks running their sites on a Thesis-based theme.

Xtreme One, recently released by the folks of WP Engineer, is a good looking candidate for anyone searching for a framework from which to build their next WordPress theme. One of its superb features, that only a few of its competitors can contend with, is its powerful layout engine. With the ability to create fixed, fluid, and flexible layouts, with only a few clicks, Xtreme One certainly has a jump on a lot of other themes, particularly for those looking for a quick setup.

Xtreme One makes a huge difference and my work a whole lot easier.

Brought to you by Nick La, the guy behind N.Design and Web Designer Wall, and Darcy Clarke, another very experienced and well known developer, Themify.me is a relatively new framework on the playing field, though that shouldn’t stop anybody from considering Themify.me for their next project. Along with beautifully designed themes available, the Themify.me framework is one of the most end-user friendly looking frameworks out there. With a gorgeous control panel, the developers have made configuring themes as easy as could be.

Conclusions

Although these 12 frameworks may be some of the more well-known options, there are dozens more available across the web. Each of these frameworks is a very viable option for some project or other, but none of them are perfect for every single project. Some have extensive code bases and as many tools and gadgets you could possibly ever need, while others are much more minimal, but all of them have their perks and downsides. Your task is to decide which is best for you and the task at hand.

Blue Rooster(Free)

Blue Rooster is a two column layout. The sidebar and footer are both widgetized , author and category templates included, as well as social buttons already intact.

NewsPress (Free)

NewsPress is a themes for magazine WordPress site. It’s built with 960 grid system with dropdown menu and social bookmarks button.

Monaco (Premium)

Beautiful premium themes for your WordPress blog, portfolio, or business site.

Sabuy (Premium)

Sabuy is elegant premium photography portfolio themes for WordPress.

Paradise (Premium)

Clean and light theme, the elements of this web design are nicely spaced out.

Circlo Squero  (Premium)

CircloSquero has modern design to fit business or personal WordPress site. Very easy to install and use, and very flexible.

Redux (Premium)

This theme has fancy design and valid HTML, with 1/2/3 Column filterable portfolios which supports video.

Videoline (Premium)

Videoline ready for WordPress 3.0. It has home slider nivo and cycle, dropdown menu, gravatar, video slider management, gallery with multi upload filter and awesome nice effect, and other nice features.

Superb (Premium)

This template support for WordPress 3.1 version and Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, IE8, IE7 browser.

SuperCMS (Premium)

SuperCMS ready and tested for WordPress 3.0 version. It has 17 unique page templates, 3 portfolio & homepage layouts, 6 attractive style options, and 5 widgetized sidebars.
